THE EMPTY CHAIR

THE EMPTY CHAIR
THE NAZARENE
[INTRO]
Someone was here.
Now they are gone.
The chair stays still
when the room moves on.
Flowers fade.
Photos stare.
Death leaves silence
in the empty chair.
[VERSE 1]
Dinner plate set but the seat stays bare,
whole house loud till you look right there.
Cup in the cupboard, coat on the rail,
name still saved in the phone as well.
Birthday comes and the room feels split,
cake still sweet but the heart can’t sit.
One less laugh in the family sound,
one more tear when the sun goes down.
We say “gone too soon” with a shaking tone,
then go back scrolling like flesh ain’t loaned.
But grief is a bell that the soul can hear,
death walked in and made time feel near.
I’m not here to wound the bruised,
I know what loss can do to you.
I’ve seen the strong look small in pain,
seen grown men break at a graveside name.
But every empty chair still preaches clear,
life is a mist, not a kingdom here.
No one owns breath, no one owns years,
no gold buys back those final tears.
So while you breathe, hear mercy call,
don’t build your hope on a cracking wall.
Christ is Life when the grave looks strong,
He calls the dead and the dead come home.
[HOOK]
There’s an empty chair at the table tonight,
but the grave ain’t final when Christ gives life.
Turn from sin while the door is still there,
Jesus brings hope to the empty chair.
Empty chair, but the King still speaks,
blood still calls to the lost and weak.
Come home now, let the old life end,
Christ is the Life and the sinner’s Friend.
[VERSE 2]
Some hide grief in a Sunday suit,
smile outside while the roots stay bruised.
Some drown pain in a glowing screen,
some act fine but the eyes ain’t clean.
Culture says, “Move on, stay blessed,”
but the heart still aches in the quietness.
And every funeral asks one thing:
who can stand before the King?
Hebrews says death, then judgement throne,
you don’t stand there with your mask still on.
God sees all that the camera missed,
every proud thought, every clenched fist.
Hell is real, I say that with tears,
not with laughter, not with cheers.
Sin is not small, and God is light,
nothing unclean can live in His sight.
But mercy came where the mourners cried,
Jesus stood where Lazarus died.
He wept real tears by a real stone place,
then called life out with a thunder of grace.
“I am the Resurrection and Life,”
not a soft phrase for a funeral night.
The dead will hear the Son one day,
graves will open when He calls their name.
So don’t let grief become numb despair,
don’t just stare at the empty chair.
Let sorrow turn your heart to Him,
godly grief can wake you from sin.
[VERSE 3]
Here is the Gospel, plain and true,
sin broke me and it broke you too.
Holy God and a guilty race,
no clean heart without saving grace.
Jesus Christ came in human flesh,
true man walking through dust and death.
No sin in Him, no stain, no lie,
yet He came for sinners to die.
Cross on His back, blood from His brow,
mercy was speaking then, mercy speaks now.
Nails went deep and the sky turned dim,
judgement fell on the Lamb for sin.
He shed His blood for the guilty stain,
bore our curse, bore our shame.
Cried out loud, then gave His breath,
entered fully the valley of death.
They buried His body, the stone was sealed,
hope looked hidden, the wound looked real.
But the third day broke with a holy sound,
Jesus rose bodily out of the ground.
Not a symbol, not a vibe, not a dream,
death got split by the risen King.
Scars in His hands, life in His voice,
repent and believe, this is the choice.
Bring Him the grief you cannot name,
bring Him the guilt, bring Him the shame.
Bring Him the tears from the empty chair,
He meets sinners in mercy there.
[BRIDGE]
Mercy for the grieving.
Mercy for the numb.
Mercy for the family
when the dark days come.
Blood for the guilty.
Grace for despair.
Life in Jesus
beyond the empty chair.
Come while the door stays open.
Come while your lungs still rise.
Come to the Man of Sorrows.
Come to the Lord of Life.
[FINAL HOOK]
There’s an empty chair at the table tonight,
but the grave ain’t final when Christ gives life.
Turn from sin while the door is still there,
Jesus brings hope to the empty chair.
Empty chair, but the King still speaks,
blood still calls to the lost and weak.
Come home now, let the old life end,
Christ is the Life and the sinner’s Friend.
[OUTRO]
The chair is empty.
The tomb is not.
Turn to Jesus Christ.
He is our hope.
