THE THEATRE OF SELF

Track Name THE THEATRE OF SELF
00:00 / 05:52

TITLE: THE THEATRE OF SELF
ARTIST: THE NAZARENE
[INTRO]Curtain up.Smile ready.Caption polished.Soul tired.The crowd sees the mask.God sees the heart.Listen.[VERSE 1]The theatre of self has a thousand seats,
every eye online where the actor meets
a version of me with the lighting right,
public little angel in a private night.Bio like a pulpit, feed like a stage,
careful little virtues arranged on a page.
Say the right phrase, wear the right pain,
make the wound beautiful, monetise the rain. The mask sits smooth where the face should breathe,
the brand keeps asking what the soul should be.
“Be authentic,” says the market voice,
then sells ten costumes for the authentic choice.Smile for the camera, cry for the post,
turn every moment into content’s ghost.
Even grief gets framed with a perfect song,
while the real heart limps where no crowds belong.Jesus saw actors in religious clothes,
prayers on corners where the applause wind blows.
He said, “Do not practise righteousness seen
by men who crown what the Father calls unclean.”Hypocrite means actor, mask on face,
holy little posture in a public place.
Long prayers loud, but the heart far gone,
whitewashed tomb with the spotlight on.That is not just Pharisees under old stone,
that is us with a phone and a little throne.
We perform compassion, perform outrage,
perform repentance with a perfect angle. We curate humility till it smells like pride,
make a brand from the tears we hide.
Say “God gets glory” while the metrics climb,
then check the likes in the prayer time. The stage is ancient, the app is new,
the theatre only learned to livestream you.[HOOK]The theatre of self,
the mask and the crowd.
Laughing too bright,
praying too loud.Only Jesus saves.
Only Jesus saves.
Performance cannot cleanse you,
applause cannot raise.Take off the mask,
come into the light.
Christ sees the heart
and still calls tonight.[VERSE 2]Some perform wealth, some perform pain,
some perform wisdom with a borrowed name.
Some perform trauma, some perform peace,
some perform freedom while the chains increase. Some perform holiness in polished words,
Scripture on lips but a hidden curse.
Some perform rebellion, dark little crown,
“I don’t care” while the soul breaks down. The self becomes theatre, the world becomes hall,
everybody acting, everybody small.
No quiet room, no secret place,
just a camera waiting at the door of grace. But Jesus said shut the door and pray
to your Father hidden from public display.
Do not sound trumpets when mercy is shown.
Let the left hand sleep while the right hand knows.Because God does not need your lighting rig,
does not clap because your platform is big.
He is not fooled by a captioned tear,
not impressed by the costume of fear. This is not hatred of art or speech,
not saying stories should never teach.
Theatre can tell what plain words miss,
beauty can point to holiness. But when your life becomes one long role,
you can win the crowd and lose your soul.
You can gain the image, perfect the part,
while rot keeps rehearsing in the heart. The brand says, “Never break the frame.”
The Gospel says, “Confess your name.”
Not your username, not your title bright,
your real name under holy light.Sinner.Needy.Dust.Loved by mercy,
not by trust
in a mask.[HOOK]The theatre of self,
the mask and the crowd.
Laughing too bright,
praying too loud.Only Jesus saves.
Only Jesus saves.
Performance cannot cleanse you,
applause cannot raise.Take off the mask,
come into the light.
Christ sees the heart
and still calls tonight.[BRIDGE]The crowd cannot absolve you.The comments cannot heal you.The stage cannot justify you.The mask cannot survive the judgement seat. But the Cross is not a theatre. The tomb is not a prop. The blood is not a metaphor.Come real.[VERSE 3]This is the Gospel behind the curtain,
where all our acting grows uncertain.
God made us true, without disguise,
to walk in light beneath His eyes. But sin came in and the hiding began,
fig leaves stitched by a frightened man.
Adam heard footsteps in Eden’s air,
then hid from the God who had made him there.Since then we costume the guilty soul,
paint clay faces with borrowed gold.
We act like saints, act like kings,
act like wounds can become wings. But no role can cancel sin’s account.
No audience can make guilt amount
to nothing before the Holy One,
whose eyes burn brighter than noon-day sun. Then Jesus came with no false face,
full of truth and full of grace.
No mask, no spin, no double heart,
the Holy One played no holy part.He saw Nathanael under the tree,
saw Zacchaeus where crowds could not see.
Saw Peter’s boast before the fall,
saw the woman shamed before them all.He knew the secret, named the thirst,
touched the leper, loved the cursed.
He did not flatter the actor’s skin,
He called the dead to rise within. Then the greatest public spectacle came,
Roman theatre of mockery and shame.
A purple robe, a crown of thorn,
“Behold the Man,” bruised and torn. They staged Him as a failed little king,
but Heaven knew the hidden thing:
the Cross was not Rome’s clever scene,
it was God’s altar for the unclean.Blood for the actors, blood for the proud,
blood for the quiet, blood for the loud.
Blood for the hypocrite, blood for the fake,
blood for the souls too tired to ache. They buried Him once behind sealed stone,
but death could not keep the Truth alone.
Third day morning, the curtain tore wide,
Christ rose bodily, glorified. Now stop auditioning for human praise.
Stop rehearsing your righteous ways.
Bring Him the mask, the false applause,
the hidden motive, the broken cause.Repent and believe, no theatre now.
Bow to the King with the wounded brow.
He does not save the character you play.
He saves the sinner who comes His way.[FINAL HOOK]The theatre of self,
the mask and the crowd.
Laughing too bright,
praying too loud.Only Jesus saves.
Only Jesus saves.
His blood can cleanse you,
His voice can raise.Take off the mask,
come into the light.
Christ sees the heart
and still calls tonight.[OUTRO]Curtain down.Crowd gone.Mask cracked.Soul seen.But mercy is real.Christ is risen.Come as the sinner.Leave as new creation.
